Complimentary wine tastings are the norm in Calaveras County, California. Rubbing elbows and schmoozing with the winemakers are common. In fact, the owners love to talk about their wines so much, that you go away feeling like part of the family. Taking a stroll down Main St. in Murphys on a Saturday or Sunday will likely result in visiting at least 12 tasting rooms and more on the side roads. By the time you get to the end of the road, tourists will have made friends with one another and shared business cards with all their tasting mates.
Each tasting room in Murphys reflects the personality of the winemakers, and are as different as their wines are. Some are set up in rustic barns. Others are like walking into rich living rooms with custom granite bars and plush chairs. And then there's the weird and off-beat rooms. The restaraunts are inviting and top-notch with excellent cuisine. Each one has a unique menu and expertly pairs every course with these local wines.
Frog's Tooth Vineyardproduces a truly exceptional 2005 Tempranillo ($21.99) from the Sierra Foothills. Other noteworthy wines this year are: Fume' Blanc, Meritage, Petit Sirah and Viognier. Their tasting room is located in a back alley off 380 Main Street, (209) 728-2700. The decor is fresh and classy with a gorgeous custom bar. Winemakers Harry, Larry and Gary might be the newest kids on the block, but definatley impressive.
Twisted Oak Tasting Roomis located at 350 Main Street, Murphys, or visit their winery/tasting room/rubber chicken forest at 4280 Red Hill Road at Highway 4 in Vallecito (209) 736-9080. These folks are so Twisted they have a wine called "%#&@", and another red blend that goes by the name of "Murgatroyd". Read the back of their bottles and blogs, visit their "uniquely bizarre" tasting room, and you'll see why this vineyard is truly Twisted. Wines that stand out this year are: 2006 Viognier ($22.00) and 2004 Syrah ($24.00).
Milliaire Winery and Tasting Room can be found at 276 Main Street, Murphys, and is housed in a renovated old Flying A gas station (209) 728-1658. Many award winning wines including their 2003 Late Harvest Zinfandel ($22.00) which took a gold ribbon at the Orange County Fair and a silver in Amador. Other award winners are: 2003 Clockspring Zinfandel-Amador (19.00), 2005 "Catherine's Cuvee" Muscat ($16.00) and 2005 Chardonnay-Sierra Foothills ($15.00). Their Simply Red-Sierra Foothills at only $7.00, is a Zin-Syrah blend and pairs great with spaghetti and pizza.
"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"
Calaveras County isn't famous only for it's award winning wines. It is also immortalized in Mark Twain's short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". Each year, contestants from all around, bring their frogs to try and break the old record of 21' 5 3/4".
