Selecting a wine of different regions can be a challenge for some. With such varieties being offered in specialty wine and liquor stores, one can become overwhelmed.

For a beginning wine drinker an economical way of finding out about different wines in Massachusetts is to attend free weekly or annual wine events at a wine or liquor store in Boston and surrounding areas. This is a good way to taste wines from different regions and prices ranges.

Typically at a specialty wine store, a person will get more in depth information about a bottle of wine as the employees tend to be educated on the story behind each bottle. At a neighborhood liquor store, one can still learn about wine, by attending an annual event at the store where there are wine experts. To keep up to date with free tastings, sign up for the store’s newsletter to be sent by e-mail for upcoming events.

What to Expect At a Free Annual Wine Event

This kind of wine tasting usually happens about every six months. When attending one of these events, a person will be given a wine glass and a brochure listing the wines and the table numbers. There will be a number listed on the brochure in case the person decides to purchase a bottle of choice, which they keep up front with the cashier until ready to purchase. At these annual events, one can expect to sip and taste a huge selection of red, white and dessert wines mostly from what is sold in the store. Another advantage of attending an annual event like this is that it allows the wine drinker to purchase bottles at a discount, usually at ten percent. This is a great way to try before buying.

Where to Find Wine Tasting Events

Find a local wine event for all parts of Massachusetts online at localwineevents.com. This online resource has a vast selection of events mostly in the Boston area and has occasional listings outside of Boston. The website lists events not only for wine but also for food and wine pairing including special events from chefs, local wineries and restaurants. Sign up for their weekly newsletter and stay informed about all events for a specific area. These are paid for events ranging in prices from moderate to expensive.

In western Massachusetts, a good free weekly wine event is at Julio’s Liquors in Westborough. Located right off of Route 9, the liquor store host weekly events on Thursday nights from 7-8 pm. Tim Korby, the wine expert at Julio’s, holds the event in their Angel Share Tasting Room where visitors will sip on wine explained by Tim as he educates potential customers on the wines for the evening. To sign up for these weekly events and to see which wines will be presented go to juliosliquors.com

The most important thing to remember when going to a wine tasting is to drink whatever is pleasing to the palette. By venturing out and going to different tastings, the beginner and experienced wine lover will be delighted with the many choices to slowly sip.
